The Cardinals clinched the best record in the NL at 97–65, granting Holliday his fifth career postseason entrance, and fourth with the Cardinals.
On September 19, 2006, Holliday hit the longest home run of 2006 in MLB against Matt Cain of the Giants. While the official distance was 443 feet , HitTracker estimated it at 496 feet . His grand slam and triple five days later against the Braves assisted the Rockies' comeback from a 7–0 deficit to a 9–8 final victory. He garnered his second NL Player of the Week for the week ending September 24, after hitting four homers, three doubles and a triple, helping propel the Rockies to win five of seven games.

McClelland had to do the best he could with a genuinely bang-bang play; he could've called Holliday safe or he could've allowed Barrett to recover and make the tag, and either would've been understandable. He went with the former and while there isn't an angle that clearly shows Holliday touching home, there also isn't an angle that clearly shows him not touching home -- at least with enough certainty to overrule a call on the field. Holliday is the 14th player to hit his 300th home run as a Yankee, and the first since Mark Teixeira did so on June 30, 2011.
Before signing with the Yankees this past offseason, Holliday played for the Rockies , the A's and the Cardinals . Throughout his career, Holliday has received criticism for his defense. However, his high school football career ended with a 63–0 loss to Jenks in the state semifinal contest. He was also rated the third-best quarterback prospect in the nation after graduating from Stillwater in 1998. Another possible split is that Holliday crushed finesse pitchers in 2006, batting .358 and slugging 13 home runs against them. A finesse pitcher can be characterized as a pitcher in the bottom third of the league in strikeouts and walks. Dessens only struck out 15.6% of the batters he faced and walked only 6.6%, so he fits the term well. Another possible explanation could be that when batters swung at the first pitch Dessens allowed an .821 OPS and 5 home runs.
